As I’m in a music state of mind, here’s a questionnaire for you, replete with videos to boot! Big old Tunes for Tuesday, I tell you! 🙂
1. What are you listening to right now?
~ Kathy’s radio at work. She’s tuned in to 104.5 KDAT, which is the “soft” rock station. So, you know, the songs change every few minutes. I’m not listening to anything concrete at this very moment, as it were. Like, they played Bon Jovi’s “Living On a Prayer” and then went right into Meghan Trainor and John Legend singing “Like I’m Gonna Lose You.” At least, that I’m paying attention to. That’s the thing. I’m working at the same time, so not really paying attention all the time.
2. What song(s) make(s) you sad?
~ It really depends on my mood. Any song could make me cry, really. If you want specifics, I cry sometimes listening to Sarah McLachlan’s “I Will Remember You” or Imogen Heap’s “Hide and Seek.”
3. What is the most annoying song in the world?
~ “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” I don’t care who performs it. It’s bad! I know the Beatles did it originally, which is sacrilegious of me to say I hate it, because I like the Beatles, but something about that song just grates me. So I hate that song. Another song that really annoys me is “Love Shack” by the B-52s. If that song comes on, I will leave the room or quickly turn off the radio. I hate that song!
4. Your all-time favorite band?
5. Your newly discovered band is….?
~ Haim. I like Haim.
6. Best female voice?
~ Neko Case. She does not believe in autotune – unlike a lot of singers out there – so what you hear with Neko Case is what you get. And she’s got an incredible voice.
7. Best male voice?
~ Either Freddie Mercury or Phil Collins. No, I’m not joking about Phil Collins! My dad’s singing voice is like Phil Collins’ – maybe that’s why I included him.
8. Music type you find yourself listening to most?
~ All of it! Seriously, all of it. I’m always in the market for new and different music.
9. What do you listen to to hype you up?
~ Something peppy. I don’t get extremely hyped up. Something like Len’s “Steal My Sunshine” or No Doubt’s “Just A Girl” is enough to get me ready to go. You know?
10. What do you listen to when you want to calm down?
~ I listen to classical music, or just softer, soothing music.
11. Last gig/concert you went to?
~ I have never been to a concert.
12. Band you find yourself listening to the most right now?
~ All of them!
13. Most hated band?
~ Any and all boy bands. Because they’re manipulative. And they don’t even write their own songs! Awful, if you ask me. I was never a fan of any of the boy bands, from New Kids on the Block to N’Sync to Backstreet Boys to One Direction. It’s bad enough I know who they are/were.
14. Song that makes you think?
~ Hmm. Good question. I don’t know.
15. Band that you think the world should love as much as you do?
~ Unfinished Thought. They’re kind of a dark rock band, not unlike Evanescence. Stacey Nelson has the one of the best voices, very reminiscent of Amy Lee, as a matter of fact. This is a song of theirs called “Umbrella”:
Another band is Gorillaz. Gorillaz are so underrated, it’s criminal, and I know they have something of a cult following, but it should really be mainstream, because Gorillaz are that good. Their music is just amazing. Check this video out, for their song “Clint Eastwood”:
16. Coolest music video?
~ Korn’s “Freak on a Leash” is one of the coolest videos I’ve ever seen. Following the bullet trail! Yes!
Bjork’s “It’s Oh So Quiet” is another great one.
17. Music video with the most babe watch?
~ I don’t know. I don’t watch enough music videos, and I certainly don’t watch them just to count how many babes are in them.
18. What do you play/would you play in the bedroom to spice things up?
~ Smooth jazz or smooth R&B, I guess. I don’t really know.
19. Can you play a musical instrument?
~ Yes, I can play guitar, flute, and piano. Well, I can dink around on them, let me put it that way. I am in no way a virtuoso at any of them.
20. Ever been in a mosh pit?
~ No. I have a huge personal space bubble. A mosh pit would obliterate my sense of security.
21. Are you in a band?
23. Ever dated a musician?
28. Do you wish that you were a musician?
~ Yes, of course!
29. Best chick band you know of?
~ The Wreckers, no question. Haim is a close second.
31. Last song that you heard on the radio/CD….etc….?
~ That “Shut up and dance with me” song. That song is rather annoying to me, actually. Makes me think of Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy in “Batman and Robin” for some reason.
32. What do you think of classical music?
~ I like classical music. We kids grew up with a lot of it, mainly Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, and P.D.Q. Bach. (tee hee, look up P.D.Q. Bach on your own time.) Classical music can put me to sleep, and I mean that in the best way. If I’m really tired, I can pop on some classical, and be asleep within minutes.
33. What do you think of country music?
~ I like some country music, namely Emmylou Harris, Dixie Chicks, and Miranda Lambert. Country is considered a truly American music genre, or so I’ve read. So I’d have to like a little country. (For the record, Neko Case is decidedly not country. I don’t know why people label her as country. She defies labeling.)
34. What do you think of death metal?
~ I’ve heard some death metal, and it’s certainly interesting. But I’m not in a position to say anything good or bad about it, because I’m not a huge follower of death metal.
35. Last BIG band that you saw live?
~ I haven’t.
36. Are you a groupie?
~ No. Not in the literal sense of the word. Older Sister has often said, if she’d been alive at the time, she’d go groupie for Led Zeppelin. I’d probably go groupie for….gee, I don’t know who I’d want to go groupie for. I’d want to consider myself more of a Band Aid, tee hee.
Watch Penny Lane (Kate Hudson) explaining Band Aids (I love “Almost Famous”).:
37. Do you listen to music in foreign languages?
~ On occasion. Sometimes I listen to opera. Johnny has also introduced me to some Chinese and Taiwanese singers. I should listen to them a lot more, because their music is pretty good. Check out this song, by Leehom Wang, called “Forever Love.”
38. What famous musician would you like to “spend the night with”?
~ I wouldn’t. Not even when I was a teenager did I ever think like that.
39. Worst concert moment?
~ Never been to a concert.
40. Funny concert moment?
~ Never been to a concert.
41. Sad concert moment?
~ Never been to a concert.
42. Best local act you can think of?
~ Joseph Sorenson, of course. And there used to be a group called Nine Dollar Melon Baller that was pretty good – I heard them at the local Best Buy once.
43. If you were a musical instrument, what would you be?
~ A piano. Because pianos can be soft and loud, and they’re mostly pretty to look at, and they can express a wide range of emotions, depending on how they’re played.
44. Do you listen to the radio?
~ Yes, every now and then.
45. Do you watch music TV?
~ Not anymore. I used to live for music videos, but not anymore.
46. Do you follow the music charts, like the top 40?
~ Not as much as I used to. I used to live for that sort of stuff, too. Nowadays, I don’t.
47. Have you met any famous musicians?
~ No. But my Grandma once had a close encounter with Sting once, only she didn’t know who he was at the time.
48. Are any of your friends/family/etc. musicians?
~ Yes, my entire family has musical background. Dad sings and plays keyboards and saxophone; Mom sings and plays piano and keyboards; Older Sister sings and currently plays cello, can play clarinet and at one point played the contra alto clarinet; I sing and can play flute, guitar, and piano; Younger Brother can sing and once played cornet; and Youngest Brother can sing and can dink around on piano. I don’t know about many of my relatives, other than they all do love music. My aunts can all sing – I remember that; aunt Ellen sings in her church choir every week. And my maternal great grandfather was a multi-talented musician who played with the big band likes of Tommy Dorsey way back when. I believe he actually made the wooden flute my mother owns. So that’s pretty cool.
49. Song that best describes your feelings right now?
~ “You Get Me” by Michelle Branch. It’s a song about how she likes a guy so much because he understands her. That’s the way I feel about and for Johnny.
50. Song that describes your life?
~ I haven’t heard every song ever made, so I can’t say with certainty which one song would best describe my life.
51. Do you know the names of all the band members that you listen to?
~ I’m ashamed to say no. I know all the members of Queen and The Beatles and ABBA. That’s about it. I don’t know the names of Ivy’s band members, or Keane’s, or even The Goo Goo Dolls’!
52. Does a musician’s physical attractiveness play a role in the music that you listen to?
~ Nope. It’s all about the music. Look at Susan Boyle. She’s a good example of how it doesn’t matter how someone looks. What matters is the music.
53. What famous musician do you want to marry?
~ That’s assuming I want to marry a famous musician. Which I don’t.
53. Favorite movie soundtrack?
~ Trevor Jones’ score for “The Dark Crystal,” no question. Took me forever to find that in CD, and now that I own it, I’m never ever giving it up!
55. Any musician pet hates?
~ Any musician(s) my pets hate? Yes! Barbara Streisand! You should have seen Nuala bristling, turning tail and leaving the room upon hearing “Papa, Can You Hear Me” that one time. Yeah, she’s not a big fan. However, Nuala is a fan of Billy Joel, anything classical, and, surprisingly, Paramore. Jasper likes John Williams, specifically the “Star Wars” theme; that’s Jasper’s theme! As for the rest of the cats, well, they haven’t exhibited any preference for music. I guess they prefer peace and quiet, so. (You couldn’t tell by the way they act sometimes.)
56. What do your parents listen to?
~ I am proud to have gotten my musical tastes straight from both parents. Dad is the more eclectic music listener, everything from progressive to pop to rock to jazz to blues. Mom was more the pop and soft rock and classical music fan. I thank my parents for my musical tastes.
57. What are you listening to right NOW?
~ Nothing right now. Kathy left for the day, and turned her radio off. Darn.
58. Do you wear band T-shirts?
~ Not often. I have a Queen hoodie that I wear every now and then.
59. Do you cook to music?
~ Absolutely. But, you know, I don’t have a cooking soundtrack. Just anything that comes on the Pandora stream, I’ll listen to. Makes cooking more fun!
60. Do you sing in the toilet?
~ In the shower, yes. On the toilet, no.
Boy, that ran quite the gamut, huh?!?
I’ll try to do better next post.
