Sports and cynicism

What is it about sports that brings out the cynicism in all of us?

Have you ever noticed that?

I don’t know why. But I feel it, too.

Take, for example, tonight. Older Sister, Youngest Brother, and I attended a local hockey game. Our team lost, 2 to 1, but it was a good game.

But all I could think was….okay, our team’s mascot is a horse named Ricochet. And it was Ricochet’s sixteenth birthday today.

All I could think was, ‘Boy, I bet the person wearing that costume feels like a real horse’s ass sometimes.’

See what I mean?

Another weird thing is, it is the fans’ ‘duty’ to “create a hostile environment for the other team.” Uh, doesn’t that go against good sportsmanship? So I’m cynical in that I cheer for all the good plays, regardless of which team makes them. And there were some really good plays tonight from both sides.

Youngest Brother is still holding out for a bench-clearing brawl at one of the games, though. Dream on. Though I guess it could happen. Fights at hockey games annoy me. As the saying goes, “I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out.” Yeah, some games have been like that.

Doesn’t help that it was really frickin’ cold inside the arena tonight. Well, duh, Mouse, it’s an ice arena. Good thing I wore a jacket.

Older Sister was kind enough to take this picture of me.

This photo is what The Stable looks like. It’s quite nice:

(How I love the panorama feature of my new phone’s camera. It’s awesome!)

Our team even has a theme song. Yeah, a theme song.

And, yes, this is a real song. Done by a real band. The band’s name is Con Bro Chill, and the song is called, appropriately enough, “Arena.”

Doesn’t get more ripe for cynicism than that.

But, once again, it’s all part of the fun, I guess.

Let’s feed Bruce!
