What inspired you to start blogging?
~ Way back in 2005, while visiting relatives in Illinois, my uncle Larry mentioned he had a blog. And it intrigued me. When I got home, I checked out his blog, and thought, ‘Yeah, I want to do that, too!’ So in May 2005 I created a blog I called “Mouse’s Lilypad,” and I maintained that blog until June 2012, when many personal reasons forced me to stop with it; eventually, I completely deleted that blog (sort of wish I hadn’t now, but oh well). I started this new blog back in November 2012, because I just missed blogging. Paltry reason, I know, but there it is. And here I am.

How did you come up with the name to your blog?
~ Um. Yeah. Given past connotations in news media and whatnot, this was probably not the best name for a blog. But know that there is no dark secret or reasoning behind my choosing that name. My little tagline above says it all: “A Mouse’s safest domain is the basement….,” yet I’m trying to journey up, as it were, venturing out into the world, like a mouse, all nose and tentative paws first. So, that’s why I’m the “Girl in a Basement.”

What is your favorite blog that you like to read?
~ Two of my nominees above: C and John. They are both so open and honest, and they are both beautiful people for that.

C is just so inspiring; even with her struggles, she always looks for the best of and the beauty in life. And she loves fashion and pink and all sorts of flowers. And it is because of her that I’ve been trying not to be ashamed of how I look; hence all the pictures of me here. Above all, C makes me smile.

And John….once again, I mean no offense when I say John is outside my comfort zone. He challenges me, often disturbs me, but he makes me think, specifically about the whole concept(s) of right and wrong. He’s the reason why I said “Anyone is welcome here” earlier. Don’t sell yourself short, John, because you do mean a great deal, not just to me but to all you reach.

Tell about your dream job.
~ A writer, definitely. And I’d be lying if I said I had never given a thought to being an actress or a singer. Or, really, anything involving travel. But for now, I’m pretty much at my ‘dream job,’ as an administrative assistant at the current company.

Is your glass half full or half empty?
~ Hmm. Somewhere in the middle. And, yes, that does really make perfect sense.

If you could go anywhere for a week’s vacation, where would you go?
~ Well, it wouldn’t be just for a week. It’d have to be a month. If I could go anywhere for a month’s vacation, I’d go back to Europe, and visit the same cities that I visited back in ninth grade with the high school band. Those cities were: Maastricht, Kerkrade, and Amsterdam (in the Netherlands), Brussels and Brugge (in Belgium), Cologne and Aachen (in Germany), and Paris (in France). I’d spend a week in each country, and spend a couple days each week in each city, seeing everything there is to see. The reason I would do this is because, while at the time in ninth grade I considered the trip to be a blessing and the opportunity of a lifetime, it was a bad experience overall….and for a wholly stupid reason. Going back, I’d make the trip right. (And, Virginia, if you ever read this and can remember, was it Matt Anderson who coined the phrase ‘drive-by shootings’? Everyone else, stay with me! He meant picture taking, because we weren’t often allowed off the buses for pictures. He either coined that phrase or the phrase ‘full-contact photography.’ Or both. I can’t really remember.)

What food can you absolutely not eat?
~ Again, hmm. I have a love-hate relationship with food, actually. I mean, humans need to eat to survive, but sometimes, I just do not feel like eating. You know? But I can’t not eat, or else I get splitting headaches. I guess there isn’t anything I can’t eat; I don’t have food allergies or anything. There are things I’ve never eaten that I just won’t because no one else will, like liver. So.

Dark chocolate or milk chocolate?
~ Milk chocolate. Once in a blue moon. Like I said in a previous post, not a big chocolate fan.

How much time do you spend blogging?
~ Too much!

Do you watch TV – if so, what are some of your favorite shows?
~ I’m more of a movie person, so I only watch TV every now and then. Mostly cartoon shows. I have a whole list of favorite cartoon shows; they’re just too numerous to name. Maybe I’ll make it a whole post later. Just know that “Daria” is my most favorite show of all time. It’s because of Dad that I’m a fan of Monty Python, and it’s because of living in Iowa that I’m a fan of “The Red Green Show.” The family watches a lot of Discovery shows, like “Mythbusters,” “Deadliest Catch,” and (when it was on) “Dirty Jobs.” Mom and I also watch a lot of HGTV, namely “Income Property,” “Property Brothers,” and anything Mike Holmes is a part of. We all like “Pawn Stars” on the History Channel and “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” on Food Network. “Survivorman” with Les Stroud was another amazing show. I personally am not a fan of “The Big Bang Theory,” but everyone else in my family is, and Sheldon is pretty hysterical. And Younger Brother recently subscribed to Netflix, and so we’ve been watching shows like “The West Wing” and “Futurama” via Netflix. Turns out I did have a thing for sci-fi shows, too, like “Quantum Leap,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “The Dresden Files,” and of course “The X-Files” (which was very nearly banned in our house after the circus sideshow episode, if anyone remembers that one). Other than that, we just watch the local news, or else we watch The Weather Channel.

That’s it for now. And that was fun!

I’ve decided that either Saturday or Sunday I will be posting the story. I’m sorry about all the dramatic build-up to it, because it really isn’t much of a story, but that’s exactly why I’m going to post it, to hopefully get some feedback and/or see where anyone would want it to go. So. I mean, you’ll probably be like “That’s it?!?” when you read it, but….gahh, I should stop talking! Won’t be ’til the weekend!
